Abstract
This study evaluates the offshore wind energy potential in the Gulf of Aqaba, Jordan, with a focus on identifying optimal locations for large-scale wind farm installations and preliminary screening and indicative economic assessment. The study utilizes global wind data, satellite-based tools, and local wind patterns to provide a comprehensive assessment of the region’s wind resource capacity. The study revealed that offshore wind turbines in the Gulf of Aqaba can achieve maximum power generation, with wind speeds ranging from 11 m/s to 16 m/s at turbine heights exceeding 200 meters. The identified optimal location covers an area of approximately 53 km², where an estimated 100 turbines, each with a 15 MW nameplate capacity, could be installed. The proposed wind farm has a power generation capability of about 1.5 GW, capable of generating approximately 42% of Jordan’s annual electricity demand, subject to grid-integration studies and system flexibility requirements. The total capital investment required for the project is approximately $2.322 billion, with each turbine costing $22.5 million. The economic analysis shows preliminary indicators of economic viability, with a net profit of approximately $23.5 billion over the wind farm’s 35-year lifetime. An indicative simple payback period of approximately 6 years (undiscounted), with an indicative LCOE of approximately $47/MWh at 5% real discount rate, subject to detailed financial modeling. This analysis highlights the potential of offshore wind energy as an active viable renewable energy option, subject to detailed engineering, environmental, and preliminary financial studies for Jordan, supporting the country’s renewable energy goals and reducing dependence on fuel imports.
